What is Microsoft SQL?

A Relational Database Management System (RDMS), Microsoft SQL is used to store, organise, search, retrieve and manage data from your various databases requested by various software applications.

It is scalable and can handle huge amounts of data with lots of transactions and is used by medium to large businesses, government departments, educational institutions and more to process orders, manage financial transactions, store historical data libraries, perform data analysis and generate reports and analyse data for business intelligence purposes.

Microsoft SQL Server comes in several editions, each suited to different needs: Express is free and ideal for lightweight applications or development, Standard is best for small to mid-sized businesses requiring core database features, while Enterprise is designed for large-scale, mission-critical applications with advanced performance, security, and high availability. Other editions like Developer are full-featured but for non-production use, and Web is tailored for web hosting providers under specific licensing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear answers to common questions about our services, features, and support below.

SQL Server is a relational database management system (RDBMS) developed by Microsoft. It is used to store and manage data, support applications, and provide access to databases through structured query language (SQL). SQL Server is widely used for data storage, business intelligence, and enterprise-level applications.

Key features of SQL Server include:

    • Transactional support for data integrity.
    • Security features like data encryption, authentication, and authorization.
    • Data storage in tables with flexible schemas.
    • Backup and restore options for data protection.
    • Business Intelligence tools, including SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
    • Scalability to handle large datasets and high concurrency.

    To install SQL Server:

    • Download the installation package from the Microsoft website.
    • Launch the SQL Server installer and choose the edition (e.g., Express, Standard, Enterprise).
    • Follow the setup wizard, which includes configuring server settings, authentication modes, and SQL Server features.
    • Complete the installation and configure server settings like network protocols and firewall rules.

SQL Server is available in several editions, including:

    • SQL Server Express (free, with limitations on database size and features).
    • SQL Server Standard (offers core database features, reporting, and analytics).
    • SQL Server Enterprise (advanced features for large-scale enterprise applications).
    • SQL Server Web (for web hosting environments).
    • SQL Server Developer (full-featured version for development and testing purposes).

SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is a graphical user interface (GUI) tool that helps administrators and developers manage SQL Server databases. SSMS allows you to query databases, configure settings, backup and restore databases, and troubleshoot SQL Server instances.

To back up a database in SQL Server:

    • Open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
    • Right-click on the database you want to back up.
    • Select Tasks > Back Up.
    • Choose the backup type (full, differential, or transaction log).
    • Specify the backup destination (e.g., disk or tape).
    • Click OK to perform the backup.

SQL Server provides robust security features, including:

    • Authentication: Supports both Windows authentication and SQL Server authentication.
    • Authorization: Roles and permissions can be assigned to users and groups to control access to databases.
    • Encryption: Data can be encrypted at rest and in transit using Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and SSL/TLS for secure connections.
    • Auditing: SQL Server provides auditing features to track and log user activities and database access.

To optimize query performance in SQL Server:

    • Indexing: Create appropriate indexes to speed up queries.
    • Query optimization: Use EXPLAIN or SET STATISTICS to analyze and optimize query execution plans.
    • Database normalization: Ensure the database schema is properly normalized to reduce data redundancy.
    • Use of stored procedures: Use stored procedures for frequently used queries to improve execution time.
    • Monitoring: Use SQL Server Profiler or Extended Events to monitor and identify performance bottlenecks.

SQL Server provides several high availability options to ensure database uptime, including:

    • Always On Availability Groups: A feature for database replication and failover to ensure high availability.
    • Database Mirroring: A technique for maintaining two copies of a database (primary and mirror) with automatic failover.
    • Log Shipping: A backup and restore mechanism for maintaining redundant copies of a database.
    • Replication: Distributes data across multiple servers for redundancy and load balancing.

SQL Server provides several built-in tools to monitor performance:

    • SQL Server Profiler: Captures and analyzes SQL queries and events in real-time.
    • Performance Monitor (PerfMon): A Windows tool that can track system and SQL Server performance metrics.
    • Dynamic Management Views (DMVs): SQL Server provides DMVs to query performance-related data directly from the system tables.
    • SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) Reports: SSMS includes performance dashboards and reports to help identify issues with queries and system performance.
