What Are Remote Desktop Services?

Remote Desktop Services on your Windows Server gives your team access to all their usual Windows business applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and more plus all their data, files and folders on any device, wherever they are, as if they were sitting in front of their computer in their office.

At VPS Blocks, our customers also appreciate that it also makes it easy to easily update software and control access permissions from a single location.

Work From Home Solutions

In 2016, it was estimated that approximately 5% of Australians worked from home. By 2023, that number had climbed to more than one in three workers. This growth has meant more and more businesses need a safe, practical means of giving teams spread out around a city, state or country access to all the tools they would normally have on their desktop at work to ensure continued productivity. It’s an excellent option for staff who work from home, work in a hybrid manner, or for teams out in the field on a regular basis.

Windows Remote Desktop Services through VPS Blocks gives you that ability and reduces the cost of updating hardware and installing and maintaining the various applications on a bunch of physical computers.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear answers to common questions about our services, features, and support below.

Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is a Microsoft technology that allows users to access a virtual desktop or applications hosted on a remote server over a network. RDS enables centralized management of desktops and applications, allowing users to connect remotely from different devices.

The main components of Remote Desktop Services include:

    • Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH): Hosts desktops and applications for remote users.
    • Remote Desktop Connection Broker (RDCB): Manages user connections and redirects users to the appropriate session.
    • Remote Desktop Web Access (RDWA): Allows users to access their RDS applications and desktops through a web browser.
    • Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway): Provides secure remote access to RDS over the internet.
    • Remote Desktop Licensing (RDL): Manages and allocates RDS client access licenses (CALs).

    RDS offers several benefits, including:

    • Centralized management: Applications and desktops are managed on a server, reducing complexity for end-users.
    • Cost savings: Reduces the need for high-powered client machines by running applications remotely.
    • Remote access: Users can securely access their desktops and applications from anywhere, on any device.
    • Enhanced security: Applications and data stay within the company network, minimizing the risk of data loss.

RDS provides access to a shared desktop or application environment, where multiple users access the same virtualized environment. VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure), on the other hand, provides each user with their own isolated virtual desktop. RDS is more cost-effective for application delivery, while VDI offers more flexibility for personalized desktop environments.

Yes, RDS can be configured to host specific applications rather than full desktops. This is known as RemoteApp and allows users to access individual applications (e.g., Microsoft Office) as if they were running locally on their machines, while the application itself is hosted remotely.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a secure connection between a user’s device and the corporate network, while RDS enables users to access desktops or applications hosted on a remote server. A VPN provides access to the network, but RDS is specifically designed for application and desktop delivery, making it more suitable for remote work scenarios.

To set up RDS on Windows Server, you need to:

    • Install the Remote Desktop Services role through Server Manager.
    • Configure RDS components (e.g., RDSH, RDCB, RDWA, RD Gateway).
    • Install RDS client access licenses (CALs).
    • Set up user profiles, group policies, and any required security settings.
    • Configure the RDS licensing server to manage user access.

Yes, Remote Desktop Services supports simultaneous access for multiple users. Each user is allocated a session on the RDS server, enabling them to run applications and access their desktop in a shared environment.

RDS licensing is managed through the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager. You need to purchase Client Access Licenses (CALs) for each user or device that will access the RDS server. You can configure and track licenses using the Remote Desktop Licensing Server.

Yes, RDS can be configured for secure access. Features like Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway) provide encrypted connections over the internet. You can also implement multi-factor authentication (MFA), secure network configurations, and firewall settings to enhance the security of RDS sessions.
